Best Natural Remedies for Hair Growth

Hair growth takes a lot of time and patience. It’s a long process and there are no shortcuts to it, only little boosters that can help speed it up. Before I share the best natural remedies, let’s get this out of the way – I’m not promising insane growth in an instant because, unless you simply put on a wig, that’s just impossible. If you really want to grow out longer hair, you’ll have to find what works for you, stay persistent and be very patient. This might sound challenging and time consuming, but in reality it all comes down to sticking to your hair care routine and not measuring your strands every other day. Trust me, once you start implementing the right combination of hair boosting ingredients in your routine, you can get longer, fuller hair in just a few months.

Last year, my most popular post was this DIY hair growth potion recipe. I got a lot of positive feedback, which inspired me to dig deeper and write more about this issue. So, I decided to start off this year by doing a research on the best natural remedies for hair growth. Whether you’re struggling with hair loss, need a volume boost or just want a long hairstyle, here are the ingredients you should consider trying out!

Your hair is made of tough fibrous proteins called keratin, and having a good protein source in your diet can help you strengthen your strands and avoid breakage. Eggs are an excellent, healthy choice because they contain high levels of protein that help with regrowth.

You can nourish your hair from within by adding eggs to your diet, or do a homemade hair mask every week. I recommend doing both!

Castor oil

This is probably the best natural oil for hair growth! It’s rich in protein and antioxidants and it has antifungal, antiviral and anti – bacterial properties that boost hair growth and make it look shiny and healthy. Castor oil helps in reducing hair fall and split ends, thickening the strands and treating dandruff. It’s also used for thicker eyebrows and longer eyelashes.

I’ve been using this oil in my DIY hair treatments for a long time and so far I love the results  – you can read all about it here!

Coconut oil

Another personal favorite – coconut oil has done wonders for my hair! I’m aware that it’s been kind of a trend for a while, but I wouldn’t recommend it if it wasn’t truly helpful.

Coconut oil, combined with castor oil, has made all the difference for me. It’s rich in lauric acid and medium chain fatty acids that add instant shine and moisture to the hair and make it grow faster and stronger! So far I’ve used it on its own by applying it on my scalp and down the ends, and combined with castor oil as shown in this recipe.

Biotin is a water-soluble B-vitamin that can be found in food and supplement form. It can help renew hair follicles, grow strong, healthy hair and even combat brittle nails.

Make sure you include some biotin rich foods in your diet, such as whole grains, bananas, nuts, eggs, cauliflower, cheese and salmon, or take  biotin supplements daily.

Rosemary oil

When massaged into the scalp, rosemary oil improves circulation and helps stimulate hair growth. It has anti – inflammatory, antioxidant and antiseptic properties that can help in treating infections, dandruff and itchy scalp – all of which can slow down the hair growth process.

How to use: Add 3-5 drops of rosemary essential oil to 2 tablespoons of coconut oil. Massage into your scalp for a few minutes and leave it on for at least 30 minutes, then shampoo and rinse with lukewarm water. Use 1 -3 times a week.

Lavender oil

Another amazing essential oil for your hair – lavender oil can soothe itchy scalp and moisturize it, balance sebum production, control dandruff and treat bacterial infections. All these benefits keep the scalp healthy and ready to produce new strands. This is why massaging lavender oil into the scalp can prevent hair loss and promote hair growth.

How to use: mix 10 drops of lavender oil in 3 tablespoons of coconut oil. Massage the mixture into your scalp and leave it on for at least 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse off.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera contains proteolytic enzymes, folic acid and vitamins A, C, B-12 and E. All of these nutrients combined are amazing for the hair. Aloe vera can help heal a damaged scalp and improve follicle health, which leads to the growth of new, healthy hairs.

It can help condition your hair, increase blood circulation to the scalp and slow down hair loss. It’s definitely worth a try – use an aloe vera based hair shampoo or massage pure aloe vera gel on your scalp once a week!

Apple cider vinegar

Applying an apple cider vinegar rinse regularly can help you grow out long hair. The acidity of apple cider vinegar helps maintain the PH balance of your hair and destroy all bacteria that slow down growth. It also stimulates blood circulation and works great for deeply cleansing the scalp and removing all build up that clog the hair follicles.

How to do an ACV rinse: mix one cup of water with three tablespoons of vinegar. After you’ve shampooed and rinsed your hair, pour the mixture on your scalp and down the ends. Massage gently for a couple of minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Apply this rinse twice a week, if your hair is very dry, do it once or twice a month.

Olive oil

Olive oil is rich in omega-6 fatty acids, which makes it a natural hair conditioner that will keep your hair moisturized and make it softer and shinier. These moisturizing properties protect the hair and help prevent damage, split ends, breakage, thus promoting healthy hair and growth of thicker strands.

How to use: massage 3 tablespoons of olive oil in your scalp and down the ends. Leave it on for at least an hour, then shampoo and rinse off. Repeat this treatment once a week. Olive oil is often used in hair mask recipes, so you can either use it on it’s own or combine it with coconut oil, eggs, lavender oil, and other natural hair-boosting ingredients.
